Boat tragedy report ready

KATTAPPANA: The Justice E. Moideenkunju Commission, which is inquiring into the boat tragedy at Thekkady that resulted in the death of 45 persons on September 30, 2009, will submit its final report to the government on Thursday, according to an official release here.
The commission's term will end on Saturday. In the 232-page report, there are 22 suggestions to avoid boat accidents.


The tragedy occurred when a boat named ‘Jalakanyaka' owned by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation sunk at Marakkanam in the Thekkady lake while carrying tourists.

There will be details regarding the factors that led to the accident, reasons for the accident and those who were responsible for it.

The commission was appointed on May 18, 2010, and it held 31sittings and examined 122 records. It took evidence from 60 witnesses.

A Crime Branch police inquiry is also progressing.
