Kerala to celebrate 129th year of cake making


Thursday, 15 December 2011: Bakers Association, Kerala (BAKE) will unveil a 350-feet long cake to commemorate the 129th year of cake making in the state for two days beginning on January 21 next year at thalassery in Kannur district.
P M Sankaran, President of BAKE, said the cake would have the history of Kerala and specially Malabar region etched on it and will be on display on January 22.
Thalassery, a small town, is well-known in bakery sector and has the distinction of making the first cake in the state in 1883.
More than a lakh families in the state depend on the sector for their livelihood, Sankaran said, adding the bakery sector had been doing extremely well despite no assistance from the government, unlike some other sectors.
During the celebrations there will be stalls displaying local food items, baking stalls and bakery machinery stalls, he said.
