KPCC writes to Jayalalitha on Mullaperiyar dam issue

Thursday, December 08, 2011: KPCC chief Ramesh Chennithala today wrote to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha over the Mullaperiyar dam issue which has seen Kerala and TN at loggerheads.
In the letter Chennithala sought Jayalalitha’s immediate intervention in the issue considering danger posed by the 116-year-old reservoir on the lives of about 40 lakh people.
Meanwhile the State government has today filed a fresh plea in the Supreme Court in connection with the issue. The petition has been filed seeking permission from the Court for decreasing the storage capacity of the Mullaperiyar dam to below 120 feet with immediate effect considering the present condition of the 116-year-old reservoir.
Tamil Nadu has accused Kerala of being alarmist by alleging that the reservoir has been rendered unsafe by numerous quakes.
The dispute has escalated with Kerala government hardening its stand to demand construction of a new dam and Tamil Nadu reiterating its stand that the retrofitted existing dam is similar to a new dam.
