Mullaperiyar row: Tense situation prevails in Kumily

Sunday, December 11, 2011: The border between Tamil Nadu and Kerala near Kumily witnessed tense moments on Sunday as a mob of 250 people, marched towards the Kumily check-post as part of a protest against the stand of the Kerala government on the Mullaperiyar issue.
When they started moving towards the Kerala side, the police attempted to stop them at four points. But many of them managed to move past the police barriers.
More police personnel have been deployed along the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border in the district following the tense situation prevailing in Kerala over the Mullaperiyar dam dispute, IG Sreelekha said.
The special police force was deployed as part of the march planned to be held in Kumili by the TN farmers.
The Mullaperiyar dam dispute has escalated following Kerala’s push for the construction of a new dam in place of the existing 116-year-old reservoir and Tamil Nadu’s opposition to the proposal.
Prohibitory orders have been clamped in Kumili for three more days and police personnel have been deployed in large numbers.
