Prakash Raj calls for Centre’s intervention on Mullaperiyar

Sunday, December 11, 2011: Renowned Tamil actor Prakash Raj has sought Central government’s intervention in the Mullaperiyar dam issue which has seen Kerala and Tamil Nadu at loggerheads.
Speaking to the reporters here on Sunday, Prakash alleged that a move was on to politicize the issue.
Kerala has been pressing for twin demands: for decreasing the storage capacity of the Mullaperiyar dam to below 120 feet with immediate effect and replacing the old dam with a new one considering the present condition of the 116-year-old reservoir .
Tamil Nadu has accused Kerala of being alarmist by alleging that the reservoir has been rendered unsafe by numerous quakes.
The dispute has escalated with Kerala government hardening its stand to demand construction of a new dam and Tamil Nadu reiterating its stand that the retrofitted existing dam is similar to a new dam.
