TN politicizing Mullaperiyar dam row: Medha Patkar

Tuesday, December 13, 2011: Environmental activist Medha Patkar today opined that she was surprised by the Tamil Nadu’s stand politicizing the Mullaperiyar dam issue which has seen Kerala and TN at loggerheads.
Speaking to the reporters after visiting the agitation staged by the protestors in Chappath here on Tuesday, she added that TN must be ready for talks to amicably resolve the issue. Kerala’s demand for a new dam citing the present condition of the 116-year-old reservoir is lawful, she said.
Kerala has been pressing for its twin demands: reducing the water level to 120 feet and replacing the 116-year0old reservoir with a new one.
The issue has snowballed in the last few weeks with Kerala raising the pitch for the new dam citing safety concerns about the existing structure. Tamil Nadu has charged Kerala with whipping up panic and moved the Supreme Court for a direction to deploy CISF at the dam site, the scene of protests.
