CPM march to release cadre held in TP murder case

KANNUR: The CPI (M) Friday took out a protest march in Kuthuparamba demanding the release of a cadre arrested in connection with the murder of RMP leader T P Chandrasekharan on May 4. After the march, the activists also staged a dharna before the Kuthuparamba Police Station demanding the release of Area Committee Office Secretary C Babu, who was arrested yesterday by the probe team.

Senior leader M V Jayarajan, who held discussion with police officers, claimed they had offered to release him soon. However, police denied having made any such offer.

Later, talking to newspersons, district secretary P Jayarajan said concerted efforts were being made to implicate him in the case aimed at weakening the party in its stronghold.

Statement by Union Home Minister Mullappally Ramachandran yesterday that police could arrest only 'minnows' so far was a threat to the team probing the case, he said. As many as 13 people, including two area secretaries of CPI (M), arrested in connection with the case, were sent to police custody.

A rebel CPI (M) leader, Chandrasekharan was hacked to death by identified assailants at Vallikkode near Vatakara in Kozhikode while he was returning home on his motorbike.
