Swathy gets permission for liver transplant

KOCHI:  The medical board convened at the Kottayam Medical College gave permission to conduct a liver transplant on Swathy Krishna undergoing treatment at the Amrita Hospital for liver disease.

As Swathy’s mother is a heart patient, she cannot donate her liver and so her aunt is donating. Tests conducted were satisfactory and only the surgery has to be done.

17-year-old Swathy is the younger daughter of Krishnankutty and Raji of Ernakulam, while her aunt is from Idukki. So, the procedures in both districts should be completed. Almost 15 certificates from village office to police station should be obtained.

As per the rules of organ donation, organs should be donated only by first relations ie., parents or siblings. Even if the donor is a distant relative, there are several obstacles which actually take at least a month’s time. Several letters of consent should be furnished which should be approved by a special panel of health department. As a final step, signature of the secretary of health department should be obtained.
