Facelift for 47 schools

Forty seven government and aided schools in Kalamassery are all set to get a facelift, thanks to the ‘Unarvu’ initiative of Works Minister V K Ebrahim Kunju, which will be launched on September 7.

The Minister will inaugurate the project at Guardian Angel School, Manjummel. The project is expected to benefit about 13,000 students.

“This is a five-year comprehensive education project aimed at improving the infrastructure and educational standards in schools.

The project has been approved by the government and the order for the same will be released on the occasion for 14 schools. SIEMAT, IT@School, DIET and SSA are the co-sponsors,” said Kunju. As the majority of students are from economically and socially backward sections, handbooks will be given to the parents to educate them on their role in building their child’s future, said Unarvu coordinator Shaju.


The chief aim of the programme is to improve infrastructure, including toilets, and make the learning process more interesting and enjoyable, instill values and principles in students and foster the tradition and culture of the state. Focus will be given to the commitment towards society and responsibility. The role of agriculture will also be stressed.

As an entrepreneurial initiative, ‘Ithiri Poo’ will be launched. Here, ten seeds will be given to each student to create a garden on the campus, also enabling them to gather flowers for the next Onam. Seeds will also be sent home to grow a home garden. This will  help the students to bond with nature.

A vegetable garden venture is also in the pipeline, he said. Thrust will be laid on improving the educational standards and awards will be given for the best school, best PTA, best teacher and best student.

 Besides, talented students will be given guidance and special coaching. The District Institute of Education and Training has commenced a survey in the schools and a report on the requirements will be submitted soon, said DIET principal Muralidharan.

“Two toilet blocks worth Rs 4.5 lakh have already been constructed at JBS L P School as part of the project. A sum of Rs 20 crore, including the MLA’s fund and that from the sponsors, will be spent this year,” the Minister said.
