KPCC revamp: Leaders oppose sharing of posts

With Congress organisational revamp reaching its final stages, senior party leaders led by Vayalar Ravi are coming together against the move of two groups led by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala to share the party posts between them.

Efforts are also on to bring in a realignment within the party rank and file to form a robust third group to check the sharing of the spoils by the ‘A’ and the ‘Broad I’ groups.

Senior Congress leaders, who are not identified with any group in the party, have taken a stand that a final decision regarding the party revamp formula should be taken only after holding discussions with them. A day after Vayalar Ravi held a one-hour closed-door meeting with K Muraleedharan MLA in Kozhikode, he met P C Chacko in Thrissur to discuss the revamp on Sunday.

While Chacko declined to comment on the KPCC reconstitution,  Muraleedharn told ‘Express’ that the party high command had given a clear direction th at a revamp should be carried out only after discussing it with all the senior leaders in the state. ‘’The party revamp should not end as a mere process that was carried out just to accommodate people from the two groups. It should be done fairly after holding discussions with senior party leaders in the state. The sharing of party positions and DCCs on group equations will only weaken the party instead of strengthening it,’’ he said.

Vayalar Ravi also made it clear that the process of organisational reconstitution

should not be unilateral and that a consensus should be reached regarding the revamp after taking the senior Congress leaders in the state intoconfidence. ‘’The Congress revamp should not be undertaken based on group equations but it should be carried out to strengthen the party,’’ he said.

However, V M Sudheeran dismissed that a realignment was happening in the Congress ahead of the much-awaited revamp. ‘’There are leaders like me who always kept away from the group politics inside the Congress. Not identifying with any group is not a disqualification.

Instead of sharing the DCCs on group basis, it should be done on the basis of merit. Leaders who can head a DCC and have party workers’ acceptance should be given the post instead of dividing them on group basis. An open discussion with all senior leaders in the state should be carried out before deciding on the KPCC reconstitution,’’ he said.
