People’s power wins at Vilappilsala

People’s power won over the might of officialdom at Vilappilsala on Friday. The Thiruvananthapuram district administration bowed before the resolve of  the people as it returned without accomplishing the mission at Vilappil panchayat.

The move to transport machinery to Vilappilsala waste treatment plant for completing the construction of a leachate treatment plant there was defeated by the local people who created bonfires in several junctures leading to the plant.

The district administration headed by ADM P K Girija and a police force of over  2000 had to withdraw from the scene after the people resisted their move to enter the panchayat.

The police could only arrest a few while thousands of  others spread themselves on the road refusing to move.

After a struggle that lasted for two hours, the district administration announced its decision to return.

The High Court had asked the state govt to provide protection to  the corporation to transport the machinery to the Vilappilsala plant on or before August 3.
