Police curtailing political freedom: CPM

The CPM leaders in the district have made a representation to the District Collector and the DIG of Police stating that the police have been curtailing their political freedom. CPM Central Committee member and former minister P K Sreemathi, M V Jarayajan, James Mathew MLA, M Prakasan and K P Sahadevan are the CPM leaders who met District Collector Retan Kelakar and DIG Jose George to complain against the police action. They stated in their representation that the biggest provocation for violence that followed the arrest of CPM district secretary P Jayarajan came from the part of the police.

The CPM had decided to launch a campaign against the rise in prices of essential commodities but the police refused to give permission to use the public address system for the campaign. The arrests without reasons being made by the police are affecting the normal political work of the party, they added.

They also stated that the party workers taken into custody were being denied medical treatment by the police. The attack on the Cooperative Hospital at Taliparamba should be viewed as a serious issue, and urgent measures should be taken to arrest the culprits involved in the incident, they said.
