25 accident-prone spots in Kerala


New Delhi, Sept 12, 2012: Kerala has the highest number of accident-prone black spots in National Highways entrusted with the Public Works department.

Out of the 25 highly dangerous blackspots identified with the help of state police department, 23 in Kerala falls under National Highways maintained by the PWD. Two blackspots are in National Highways maintained by the NHAI.

A total of 325 most dangerous black spots have been identified in 13 States (25 each) with the help of State Police Departments. These spots account for about 90 % road accidents for which several short term and long term remedial measures have been proposed for implementation, so as to reduce road accidents.

Out of these 325 black spots, 233 black spots are on National Highways (NHs) with National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Their improvement is included under various projects at different stages of implementation. Out of remaining 92 black spots, 18 black spots are on State Highways (SHs), which is the responsibility of the State Governments.

Further out of remaining 74 black spots on National Highways entrusted to State PWDs, 13 black spots are on stretches proposed for improvement on BOT Basis.
