Russian woman, Pandalam Councillor die in car-lorry crash

KOTTARAKKARA: A Russian woman and Pandalam BJP Councillor died when the Scorpio car in which they were travelling collided with a Tanker lorry on Tuesday. The councillor along with a few foreign tourists were going from Thiruvananthapuram to Kottarakkara. Two other foreigners inside the car were injured.

The dead were Russian tourists Polyakova Erina (46 ) and Pandalam native and Councillor Udayachandran, who was driving the car. The incident happened at 7 in the morning on Kottarakkara – Kalayapuram MC road near CSI church. The injured are Russian Valo Shinola (45) and Malik Dina (43).

The councillor was travelling with the tourists who had visited Pandalam. The accident happened when they were returning to Pandalam after visiting Thiruvananthapuram. The car got completely crushed in the accident. The collision happened when the car took a curve to enter the coffee shop that was in the opposite side.

Soon after the accident, the tanker lorry driver scooted from the place. The locals and the fire force personnel broke open the car and took out the accident victims. Though they were shifted to Kottarakkara Taluk hospital, two persons died on the way. Two tourists who were seriously injured were first admitted to a private hospital in Kottarakkara and then shifted to Medical college hospital. Kottarakkara Rural SP S Sasikumar reached the accident spot and took further steps.
