Saumya case: Arguments over review petition ends; Katju asked to appear in person

NEW DELHI: Arguments in the Supreme Court over a review petition in the Saumya murder case was completed today. The petition was filed by the Kerala government and Saumya’s mother Sumathy.

The hearing on the petition was postponed to November 11.

The division bench comprising Justices Ranjan Gogoi, P C Path and U U Lalith also directed former SC judge Markandey Katju, who had criticised the Supreme Court order commuting the death penalty given to the convict, to appear in person before the court.

The court said the argument on what Katjju said could be heard after Diwali vacation.

This is for the first time that the SC is sending a notice to a former SC judge.

In the review petition filed by the government and Saumya’s mother, it is pled that Saumya was murdered by Govindachamy and hence his death penalty be reinstated.

Katju, also a former Press Council of India Chairman, has said through his Facebook post that the Supreme Court order commuting the death penalty was erroneous.
