CK Chandrappan to continue as CPI State secretary
Saturday, February 11, 2012: Veteran CPI leader CK Chandrappan was on Saturday re-elected as the secretary of the Kerala CPI at the end of the State conference of the party.
Chandrappan with whom the party delegates stood for his tough stand against the CPM was re-elected unanimously. The sentiments of the delegates from most of the districts during the past few days were more or less in favour of Chandrappan with even party central leadership supporting the state secretary.
The 89-member state council and the 7-member control commission were elected in the conference. The soft-spoken Chandrappan is known for his clean image and his very strong positions on political issues, particularly the relations between the Left and the Congress.
Chandrappan had come into politics as a student activist in the 1950s and had served as national president and general secretary of the All India Students Federation (AISF) and president and general secretary of the All India Youth Federation (AISF).
A parliamentarian of high standing, Chandrappan was elected to the Lok Sabha three times, first in 1971 from Thalassery, then from Kannur and in 2004 from Thrissur.
