Now, E P Jayarajan lands in controversy over demand for teak wood

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPM Central Committee member E P Jayarajan, who has had to quit as minister for his alleged nepotism, today landed in fresh controversy. This time it is regarding the demand for teak wood from the Forest minister.

The new controversy broke out after the letter he wrote as a minister to Forest Minister K Raju, asking for teak wood for his family temple, was leaked to the media.

The Forest minister had handed over the letter to Principal Chief Conservator. The department, after examining official formalities, replied to Jayarajan in writing that it won’t be able to allow free supply of teak wood.

Jayarajan had asked for 1200 cubic metre teak wood for building the flag mast at his family temple at Mayyil in Kannur. He had used his official letter pad to write the letter. The chief conservator had written to Jayarajan that since the wood cost crores of rupees, it would not handed over free of cost.

Meanwhile, Jayarajan said he would not comment on the teak controversy.

Now, it is battle for winning: Kummanam Rajasekharan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The BJP will take a plunge into Assembly election campaign not for just opening an account but to seek people’s mandate to govern Kerala. The new BJP president Kummanam Rajasekharan made this statement at a meet-the-press programme held at Press Club on Saturday.

“I say this after sensing the pulse of the people. Political polarisation is happening in India as the current political scenario has moulded two groups – the BJP and anti-Modi group. The signs of this was visible during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Kerala. The CPM which boycotted Vizhinjam inauguration function, saying that they would not share the dais with “tainted chief minister”, later joined the Congress to support him when he was not invited for Shankar statue unveiling ceremony. The people are seeing all this. In the election, this will turn favourable to the Front that include the BJP,” Kummanam said.

He said the party’s aim is to rally people against religious discrimination. SNDP General Secretary Vellapally Natesan and Babu had set the ball rolling…more people would join the movement in the coming days.

“Why those who talk about secularism show discrimination towards the Hindu religion? Why only Hindus’ worshipping places are being brought under government administration. For disclosing such truths why only case was filed against Vellapally?,” he asked
The BJP State chief said many allegations were raised against Vellapally and leaders like him, now and then. All those were bogus allegations which could not be proved. “Now, I don’t mean that Vellapally and we are against religious minorities. Campaigns against us are propaganda aimed at attracting the religious minorities towards Left/Right fronts. There are allegations, as mentioned in Chennithala’s letter to the high command, that Congress is rendering concessions only to religious minorities. They only want to give something to the Hindu groups just to mollify them. Such politics of mollification should end. In a democratic set up, no one should appease anyone. Discrimination should also not be shown towards anyone,” he said.

Detailing the BJP’s policies, Kummanam said the party’s aim would be to bring back value-based politics to Kerala. The present status of reservation should continue. A comprehensive package for Western Ghats protection should be implemented. Without diluting Forest law, it should be used to help Adivasis. Excess land should be distributed among them. “The State’s environment is in a deplorable state. What we eat now is poison. Neither the ruling front nor the Opposition is bothered about this,” he added.

Now, controversy over Leader's statue

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The life-size statue of former chief minister and the late Congress leader K Karunakaran, which was recently unveiled by President Pranab Mukherjee, became the subject of controversy on Monday.

Karunakaran’s daughter and Congress leader Padmaja Venugopal opined that the face of the statue didn’t look like her father. “It lacks his trade-mark pearly smile. The defect has been brought to the notice of the KPCC,” she added.
Karunakaran’s son and MLA K Muraleedharan also said that he too had pointed out the mistake much earlier.

The 12.5-feet statue was constructed by a famous sculptor from Manacaud, K S Sidhan, who was quick to accept the criticism. He said he was asked to complete the work in time for the president to unveil it when he was visiting the State. “The time was limited and I had to rush through... I would make necessary changes to the face,” he added.
