Land identified for airport in Erumeli, says CM

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Wednesday informed centre that land has been identified for constructing an airport in Erumeli for the convenience of Sabarimala devotees to reach by air. Pinarayi later told reporters that the union minister had assured to provide things including a no objection certificate (NOC) after land is found.

The UDF government had planned to construct an airport in Aranmula. However, the project got delayed due to stiff opposition from Aranmula heritage conservation samithi and the state BJP leadership. The Left Front too had opposed the Aranmula project. Following that, this government identified land in Erumeli.

Sabarimala is visited by millions of devotees and they all want an airport there. The centre had assured to take steps if land is suggested. Land has been found for the airport and this should be informed to the centre.  An airport in Aranmula is a closed chapter, he added.

Law soon to protect govt lands: Kanam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPI State Secretary Kanam Rajendran has said the government will bring in new law to protect government lands and to ensure that lands are not usurped.

At a face-to-face programme held under the aegis of Kesari Memorial test on Saturday, he said the LDF had started discussions on making of laws to protect lands. The government should take a relook into Agricultural reforms. The government should seriously think about distributing lands to the landless.

The CPI leader alleged that the prime minister withdrew Rs 500/1000 as he could not kept his promise on seizing black money stashed away in offshore banks. “The Centre’s aim is to destroy cooperative sector and they should clarify why they are taking such a stand,” he said and sarcastically alleged that Modi was collecting old notes through banks to give loans to Corporates.
With reference to Kannur violence, Kanam said that the LDF should take the initiative to restore peace. “It is the BJP’s intention to create an impression that law and order situation is worst in Kerala and they have been succeeding in it,” he said.

To another question, Kanam said a court is not anybody’s family property. Accredited journalists should be allowed to do reporting from court premises.

ATMs still empty; Crisis continues

KOCHI/THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: People are still struggling to find money for their day today expenses. Almost all banks in the State have been witnessing long-winding queues of customers jostling to deposit Rs 550/1000 notes and withdraw valid notes.

Meanwhile, of the 7000 ATMs in the Thiruvananthapuram district, only 3000 functioned. Most of them are near empty or empty. The ATMs which had remained closed for the past two days had opened yesterday. But within minutes, all those ATMs had become empty, creating panic among the people.

Yesterday there were long queues in front of ATMs and in some places people, who were in a hurry to withdraw money, jumped queues and created dramatic scenes. The hope was that with the opening of ATMs, the rush at banks would be less but this didn’t materialise. Yesterday many ATMs in urban and suburban areas remained closed. Even many ATM counters where banks deposited directly remained shut yesterday.

Heavy rush was also seen in post office cash counters.

KSRTC stops accepting Rs 500, 1000 notes

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KSRTC has given instruction to its conductors not to accept invalid Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes. Conductors stopped accepting the notes after 12 am today. The demonetised money collected by long distance bus conductors was deposited in the nearest KSRTC depots.

Though the Centre had relaxed the restriction on the use of old notes (rs 500 and 1000) to further 72 hours, this was not obeyed by the KSRTC. KSRTC officials came out with the clarification that the State government had not given them any instruction in this regard and that was why they were not accepting the invalid notes.

By the time the Centre issued orders for the extension of relaxation, the working time of KSRTC chief office had ended. As the following two days (second Saturday and Sunday) are holidays, KSRTC may hardly examine the Centre’s order and pass instructions accordingly.

The conductors had struggled to give changes for Rs 500 and Rs 1000 today. In many instances, conductors and passengers had strong verbal fights over the money. Some passengers also just boarded buses to get their invalid money exchanged.

Soumya case: Katju firm in stand

NEW DELHI: Justice Markandey Katju Thursday said that he sticks to his earlier stand that the Supreme Court had made some serious mistakes in the Soumya case by commuting the death sentence of the accused to life. Mistakes can happen to judges and if that has happened, it should be corrected, he wrote in his Facebook page. Katju has been asked to appear before the court on Friday at 2 pm and give an explanation on his statement over the Supreme Court verdict.

In a Facebook post, he had said, "I genuinely believe that the Supreme Court had made some serious mistakes in its judgement by reversing the death penalty awarded by Kerala High Court".

"Possibly these mistakes were made because the court was so overburdened with work that it cannot give as much time to cases as they deserve, which they would have otherwise done, had it not been for this heavy load of cases to decide," he said.

Quoting celebrated British Judge Lord Denning, Justice Katju said, 'The Judge has not been born who has not made a mistake'.

"We are all humans, and all of us make mistakes, but a gentleman is one who realises his mistake, acknowledges it, and seeks to make amends," Justice Katju said.

"This should apply to judges too. I myself have sometimes made mistakes in my judgements," he sai

Co-operative banks to accept old notes

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Reserve Bank of India has directed cooperative banks to accept Rs 500 and Rs 1000 scrapped by the centre. The RBI has directed to accept old notes as deposit and not to replace them. The cooperative banks were first not ready to accept the scrapped notes. They were also not ready to accept the notes as deposits also. Following that, the government approached the Reserve Bank.

There are primary co-operative banks with bank deposits of Rs 250-300 crore in the state. A cooperative bank in Kozhikode has the large investment of more than 1000 crore. The deposits in all cooperative banks will come close to one lakh crore. District cooperative banks are now under the Reserve Bank.

As the income tax had raided primary cooperative banks, deposits in these banks are insecure. The situation is such that anyone can get the list of investors from the bank. The interest towards cooperative banks have declined with the withdrawal of high denomination notes.

Gold price climbs down

THIRUVANANTHPURAM: The gold price has come down with the same ease with which it had gone up. The price came down by Rs 600 per sovereign and today’s gold price landed at Rs 22,880 per sovereign. The price of one gram came down by Rs 75 to become Rs 2860.

Yesterday, the price of a sovereign gold was Rs 23,480.

Following the scrapping of Rs 500 and Rs 1000, customers, who were having rupees of those denominations, had crowded in jewellery shops for buying gold. Though they thought of converting Rs 500 and Rs 1000 into gold, those notes were not accepted by jewellery shops.  The shoppers only accepted credit/debit cards or cheques and due to this many had to return empty handed unable to buy even half a sovereign of gold.

Plea seeking further probe in Jisha case dismissed

KOCHI: The Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court Thursday rejected the plea of Pappu, father of Jisha of Perumabavoor, seeking further probe in the murder case. Rejecting the plea, the court said they are not intervening now as a charge sheet has been filed in the case. Pappu had argued that things stated by the police in the charge sheet are unbelievable.

The plea had pointed that many of the findings of the investigating team are baseless and the time of the murder in the post mortem report and charge sheet are contradictory.  The team has not been able to recover the weapon used for the murder. The argument of the police that Ameerul Islam is the lone accused is unbelievable.

Long queues in front of banks in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Huge crowds gathered outside banks to exchange the scrapped notes of Rs 500 and 1000. People thronged to the banks today to withdraw their money.  An unprecedented rush was witnessed even after special counters were opened in the banks. The banks opened before their usual time and arranged facilities. After producing the identity card and affidavit, a person can exchange a maximum amount of Rs 4000. Instead of the scrapped Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, new notes of Rs 500 and 2000 were given.

A long queue was witnessed even after banks controlled the rush by giving tokens and form for the affidavit to customers. Bank employees are having a tough time to manage the customers. Many turned to deposit their money in the banks.

Though time was given to exchange and deposit the money scrapped till December 30, many turned up to the banks today itself. As announced by the centre, government hospitals and petrol bunks will accept the scrapped notes. This facility will continue. However, many refused to accept the scrapped notes yesterday as they didn’t have change.

There were many in KSRTC buses with big notes. Many conductors refused to accept the money as they didn’t have change.

Many were happy to have obtained the new currency notes. They were excited to have obtained the new Rs 2000 note. The new 500 rupee note is entirely different from the old one.

Thomas Isaac's stand will only help black money hoarders: Kummanam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: By criticising PM Modi, who had set off an epochal economic reform, Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Isaac has taken a stand to help black money hoarders, BJP State chief Kummanam Rajasekharan has said.

"When the step was hailed by people who don't have black money, only Isaac and certain Marxist leaders spoke against Modi's decision. Their stand is the same as that of black money hoarders. If the Centre had imposed restriction with prior notice, it would have helped only the hoarders. Even after knowing this, he criticised the step. Isaac who is responsible to take a favourable stand towards steps taken to help country's economy is leading the campaign to create anxiety among people. This is only to sabotage the Centre's step," he said.

He also urged the minister to denounce blind political rivalry and take steps to benefit the people.

He also demanded the government to review the decision of government institutions not to accept Rs 500 and Rs 1000.

New currency notes in ATMs from Friday: Govt

NEW DELHI: The new hard-to-fake Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 currency notes will be available at bank ATMs when they start operating again from Friday, Finance Secretary Ashok Lavasa said today.

"There are going to be some difficulties which they (people) will face but for their convenience, a number of steps have been taken by the government, there are facilities to withdraw money from ATM and exchange currency at banks , withdraw money from accounts," he said on government withdrawing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes from circulation to crack down on black money and counterfeit currency.

People, he said, do understand the objective behind the move. "And I'm sure they will cooperate in dealing with the difficulties and inconvenience that they might face. And eventually things will settle down."

Lavasa said people need money for transaction so for replacement that currency is being introduced.

"RBI will very strictly monitor it," he said. "For doing any transaction there are different ways, government's intention is to move towards cash less transaction."

The ATMs will open day after tomorrow and at many places they will open tomorrow, he said adding new notes will be available at ATMs.

Asked about the slump in stock market indices, he said, the "The market would have reacted to several other developments. Let's wait and watch how things pan out."

"If there is anything required to be done by them I am sure they will take a look and take appropriate decision at the right time," he said on market regulator Sebi looking into the crash.

Deposits of old notes in banks not to enjoy tax immunity, says Jaitley

NEW DELHI: Finance minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday said deposits of now-defunct old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes in bank accounts will not enjoy immunity from tax and the land of law will apply on source of such money.

A day after the government announced the withdrawal of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 banknotes in the country's biggest crackdown against black money, corruption and counterfeit currency, Jaitley said old higher-denomination currency notes have to be deposited in bank accounts to get newer or smaller denomination currencies.

"But it should be clear that it is no immunity scheme. This (deposit) does not provide any relief from taxation. The law of land will apply (on source of fund)," he said.

"If the money is legitimate which had been previously withdrawn from bank or earned legally and saved and had been disclosed, there is nothing to worry about," Jaitley said.

But if it is illegal money, source will have to be disclosed and if it is a crime money, or bribe money, then it is trouble, he told DD News.

The finance minister further said that housewives and farmers with genuine savings need not worry about depositing cash in their bank accounts.

"The small amounts that people will deposit like Rs 25,000, 30,000 or 50,000 lying in house for expenses, whatever money could be there for meeting normal family expenses they need not worry. They can go to banks," he said.

The finance minister said for first one or two weeks replacements may be less but after 2-3 weeks as more currency notes come in market then normal replacement will be available.

The move would help make more and more transactions become digital, he said, adding now people will disclose income and pay taxes. "India will become a more tax compliant society."

Jaitley said that people who have accumulated black money, crime money or bribe would suffer after this.

"There is a premium now that this decision has created on honesty and dis-premium on dishonesty," he added.

"Obviously there are some inconvenience for a couple of days or couple of weeks but those inconvenience cannot be alibi that India continues to live (with black money and parallel economy)," he said.

The decision would bring more transactions under tax net and both direct and indirect taxes would move up. Reduction in parallel economy would increase the size of formal economy, Jaitley said.

Stating that the decision would have its ramifications on politics as well, Jaitley said some political funding has started by cheques and if this step can do some cleansing, it would be a great move.

ATMs remain shut as banks replace old currency notes

NEW DELHI: All ATMs will remain shut today and tomorrow as banks replace the now declared invalid Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes with new currency papers.

Last night, after the government's announcement of withdrawal of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, people rushed to ATMs to withdraw lower denomination valid currency notes. However, banks closed ATM operations past mid-night.

Banks are also closed today for cash balancing and stocking up of lower denomination Rs 50 and Rs 100 notes and high security new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes.

Customers can deposit their old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes in their bank accounts tomorrow, and also exchange it with lower denomination or the new security feature Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes but with a limit of Rs 20,000 a week.

The new high security feature Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes will initially be available at branches from tomorrow and at ATMs from November 11. Since most of the cash deposit machines are inside the branches, people can deposit their old currencies only tomorrow when the branches open.

Meanwhile, the government has cautioned people that since cash deposit in a account above certain limit will be monitored by Financial Intelligence Unit and tax authorities so one should refrain from someone else money.

Besides, depositing money in bank accounts, the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes can also be exchanged with lower denomination currency notes at designated banks and post offices on production of valid government identity cards like PAN, Aadhaar and Election Card from November 10 to November 24 with a daily limit of Rs 4,000.

Modi shows how little he cares about ordinary people: Rahul

NEW DELHI: Rahul Gandhi Wednesday targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for declaring Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes invalid, wondering as to how bringing in the new Rs 2000 note is going to make black money hoarding a lot harder.

In remarks laced with sarcasm, the Congress Vice President said "well done Mr Modi".

"Real culprits" who have stashed black money are "sitting tight" while lives of farmers, small shopkeepers and housewives "have been thrown in utter chaos," he said in a series of tweets.

"Once again Mr Modi shows hw little he cares abt ordinary ppl of this country-farmers, small shopkeepers, housewives-all thrown into utter chaos".

"While the real culprits sit tight on their black money stashed away abroad or in bullion/ real estate. Well done Mr Modi"

"One Q for the PM: How is replacing 1000 rs notes with 2000 rs notes going to make black money hoarding a lot harder? #Modilogic", he said on the micro-blogging site.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi last night announced that high denomination notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 will no longer be legal tender to fight against black money and corruption.

Modi has created financial anarchy: Yechuri

LUCKNOW: CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechuri Wednesday alleged that demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes by the Narendra Modi-led government has pushed the country into total financial anarchy.

It was just another effort by the Modi government to divert the attention of the people from the real issues, he added.

"The decision of the NDA government has created panic among the common masses. The poor fighting to fulfill their daily needs are the most harassed lot," he said.

Yechuri said that the issue would be highlighted during the coming winter session of Parliament. Talking to UNI here on the sidelines of the Left Front rally to showcase their unity before the crucial Assembly elections early next year, Mr Yechuri contradicted the reasons given by the Prime Minister for last night's action.

"The PM gave four reasons for the withdrawal of the Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currencies-- firstly to end corruption, secondly to prevent counterfeiting of the currency notes, to prevent misuse of currency for terrorism and lastly for countering black money. But I challenge PM in all the four reasons-- PM did not assure that the act will end corruption, counterfeiting of currencies would again start once the new notes comes in circulation, terrorists mostly use the facility of electronic transfer and lastly over blackmoney, Modi had said that the entire black money of the country is stashed in foreign countries and in offshore haven," he claimed.

The CPI (M) general secretary said that if Modi government was really serious about ending corruption and black money, they why was it not stopping the donations funded to the political parties and not disclosing the names of the big bank defaulters who have a loan amounting of Rs 11 lakh crores even after the directives of Supreme court.

Claiming that the move to end the currencies was just any effort by the BJP to divert the attention of the people, he said at the mid-end of the NDA government, they have nothing to showcase as the unemployment graph in the country has gone up, the growth rate has dipped while the inflation was high hence they had to do something to show that they are working.

Yechuri, who did not rule out the act of the BJP-led government at the Centre aimed at the crucial Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, said that this saffron brigade could do anything to get political mileage. ''But this would not give them any benefit as people are feeling cheated by the BJP," he further said.

I don't know what was the need for so much drama," he said.

The minister said such steps would not help the government to curb black money. "The Centre should explain where the money of people like Vijaya Mallya has gone. This is trick to encourage capitalism," he added.

US election: After Indiana, Kentucky, Trump wins West Virginia

WASHINGTON: Republican Donald Trump has won West Virginia and its five electoral votes. The Mountain State was one of the billionaire's biggest supporters in the Republican primary. He is popular for promising to bring back coal jobs. Hillary Clinton had largely been largely shunned for making comments perceived as an affront to the industry.

The dynamic has resulted in one of the few states where Republicans didn't shy from the brash businessman and instead looked to ride his coattails. Many Democrats for congressional and other races scrambled to distance themselves from Clinton and refused to endorse her.

West Virginia has voted for Republican presidential candidates in each of the last four presidential races. It takes 270 electoral votes to win the presidency.

Republican Donald Trump has won Kentucky and Indiana while Democrat Hillary Clinton has won Vermont. Trump was awarded Kentucky's eight electoral votes and Indiana's 11. Vermont gives Clinton three. These are the first states to be decided Tuesday in the 2016 general election.

Banks to open more counters, work extra hours to exchange notes

New Delhi : Bank will open additional counters and work extra hours beginning Thursday to help people exchange Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes that have been declared invalid from midnight tonight.
Anticipating panic and rush at bank counters, RBI as well as government has set up control rooms in Mumbai and the national capital to avoid any crisis, Department of Economics Affairs Secretary Shatikanta Das said.
Banks will remain shut tomorrow to allow stocking of smaller currency notes and public will be allowed to tender their now invalid Rs 500 and Rs 1000 from November 10.
They can deposit any amount of the invalid currency in their bank account till December 30 and also exchange them for lower banknotes at special counters at banks and post officers till November 24 but with limit of Rs 4,000 in a day.
Bank will  report any unusual transaction to Financial intelligence Unit and tax authorities for scrutiny.
RBI Governor Urjit Patel said the central bank had ramped up production of the new higher security currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 that will replace the notes being taken out of circulation. The new notes will come into circulation from November 10, he said.
He linked the government decision to use high denomination currency notes terrorism financing and also for holding black money.
While overall currency circulation had increased by 40 per cent during 2011 to 2016, Rs 500 banknotes in circulation had gone up by 76 per cent and that of Rs 1000 by 109 per cent.
As many as 16.5 billion notes of Rs 500 denomination are in circulation currently while 6.7 billion Rs  1000 notes are in market.
While the government imposed strict cash  withdrawal limits Rs 2000 from ATM and Rs 10,000 from bank account in a day and Rs 20000 in a week, Patel said there will be no impact on liquidity in the markets including financial markets.
The cash withdrawal limit will be relaxed gradually as small currency denomination notes are adequately stocked with banks and ATM and new currency notes come into wide circulation.

Hillary Clinton should not face criminal charges: FBI

Washington : FBI Director James Comey told lawmakers Sunday the agency hasn't changed its opinion that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton should not face criminal charges over her use of personal e-mail server during her stay in the State Department, after a review of new e-mails.
Comey had dropped a bombshell 11 days from the November 8 election when he informed Congress that the FBI had discovered e-mails in its separate investigation of Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of top Clonton aide Huma Abedin, that could be connected to its investigation of whether Clinton mishandled classified information by using a private e-mail server, CNN reported.
"Based on our review, we have not changed our conclusions that we expressed in July," Comey said in a letter to top Republicans on the House Oversight Committee.
Comey's letter was the culmination of a fast-paced review of the newly discovered e-mails, law enforcement sources said on Sunday.
"We went through this as fast as we could," a senior law enforcement official told CNN.
The e-mails, thousands found, were mostly duplicates of what had already been seen and personal e-mails, law enforcement officials said in explaining how the conclusion was reached so quickly. The laptop which was found was around a decade old, with lots of personal content on it not relevant to the investigation, according to one source.
In July, Comey said Clinton had been careless but not criminal in handling sensitive material on her private e-mail server as Secretary of State.
It's impossible to know before results are tallied what impact Comey's actions first raising a vaguely worded red flag 11 days out, and then lowering it two days from the election will have on the contest.
But the news could help Clinton put to rest a controversy that has dogged her in the 2016 race's closing days, helping her rival Donald Trump narrow a polling gap nationally and in key battleground states.
