Corruption noticed in waiving of loans of adivasis

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  It has been alleged that P K Jayalakshmi, former minister for welfare of backward communities, her family and staff have snatched Rs 1.5 crore under the loan waiver scheme for adivasis. The debt of her family members have been waived off under the scheme.

A private channel reported that days before the assembly polls, she and her family snatched the money earmarked for the debt relief scheme for Mananthavady in Wayanad.

K M Mani, the then finance minister during his budget speech in 2014 had announced that loans for scheduled tribes till 2010 have been waived off under the scheme. An amount of Rs 2 crore was earmarked for it.  The cabinet convened on September 9 in 2015 decided to implement the scheme.

However, the cabinet announced the scheme after correcting to 2014 instead of 2010. The limit was fixed to Rs one lakh. The scheme would benefit only upto loans below one lakh of scheduled tribes who are non-government employees. Only one from a family are entitled for it.
