Denying breast milk: Father in police custody

KOZHIKODE: Mukkam police have filed a case against a man who had denied his new-born baby breast milk in the name of religion.

The case was filed on the basis of a complaint lodged by hospital nurse and he was taken into custody on Friday.

The child was born at Mukkam EMS cooperative hospital at around 2 am on Wednesday. Omasseri native Abu Becker's wife Hafsath had given birth to a baby boy. After a few minutes, doctors asked the mother to breast-feed the child but Abu Becker prevented her, saying milk should not be given unless five Muslim prayer times (banku) was over (24 hours). He took a stand that the child should be given milk only after Thursday noon prayers and till then only holy water from the mosque could be given.

Later top police officials had to intervene and the child was fed with the breast milk only by Thursday noon.
