Wadakkancherry gang rape: Victim’s statement recorded

KOCHI: The investigating team Sunday recorded the woman’s statement in connection with the gang rape in Wadakkancherry. She was summoned to Kochi and questioned by a team led by Palakkad Town ASP G Poonguzhali. A new team was appointed after Peramangalam circle inspector Manikandan, who first investigated the case, misbehaved with her.

Her statement was registered by a team led by three women officials including Poonguzhali, who came from Thrissur to Kochi. The woman told police that she was brutally gang raped by a four-member team consisting of her husband’s close friend and CPM Wadakkancherry municipal councillor, his brother and two others. She also told them that she was continuously pressured to retract her statement before the magistrate. Councillor Jayanthan, his brother Janeesh, Bineesh and Shibu were the four who raped her.

She was staying with her husband, a native of Fort Kochi, in Thrissur. She was misled and raped after given a lift in a car to the de-addiction centre where her husband was admitted. They had threatened with dire consequences if she reveals the incident.  Though a complaint was lodged as per her husband’s direction on August 14 in 2016, she was under pressure to withdraw the case from political centres.
