Primary school syllabus should be ”creative”: Kalam

Sunday, 18 December 2011: Emphasising on the need to remodel the primary school syllabus, former President A P J Abdul Kalam said the curriculum needs to be “creative” with focus on skill development of students.
“The primary education syllabus should change. There should be a creative syllabus and creative classrooms,” Kalam said in his inaugural address at ”Siddhi 2020”, the National Service Scheme’’s (NSS) skill development campaign at a government school in nearby Edappally north.
“In a decade’’s time, with about 300-500 million youth attaining employable age, there is a need to re-work the school syllabus of students from classes IX to XII by allotting 25 per cent of their time (in school) for skill development,” he said.
The people’’s representatives should push for this, he said.
Kalam said his vision for 2020 was a corruption free nation where the urban-rural divide would be reduced to a thin line and there would be adequate distribution of energy and good quality of life.
