Achuthanandan writes to PM on Mullaperiyar

Thursday, 01 December 2011: Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan today sought urgent central intervention to allow Kerala to build a new dam at Mullaperiyar and prevail upon Tamil Nadu to reduce the water level from 136 to 120 ft.
In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Achuthanandan said building a new dam was the only way out as the condition of the 116-year-old structure was “extremely critical.”
“This is not just a dispute between two states but one that concerns lives of three million people”, the Opposition leader in the state assembly said.
The former Chief minister recalled that in 2006, the Prime Minister had assured Kerala that the Centre would take steps to protect the genuine interests and concerns of Kerala. But that promise remained unfulfilled, he said.
