DMK demands all-party meet on Mullaperiyar issue

Friday, 09 December 2011: Expressing dissatisfaction over the action taken so far by the Centre and Tamil Nadu governments on Mullaperiyar row, DMK chief M Karunanidhi today demanded that the ruling AIADMK immediately convene an all-party meet to show that all sections of society are united on the issue.
“We should firmly announce that we are united on this issue and I believe that an all-party meeting will be useful in this regard,” he told reporters at the end of an emergent meeting of the party’s Executive here to discuss the issue.
An all-party meeting would send the right signals that there is unity in Tamil Nadu on the decades-old controversy, he said. To a question, he expressed “dissatisfaction,” over the action taken so far by both the Centre and the Jayalalithaa government on this issue.
Recently, Jayalalithaa had ruled out a special assembly session or an all-party meeting to discuss the issue on the plea that all parties are united on the issue. Karunanidhi also said that DMK would stage a hunger strike and a ‘mammoth human chain’ next week in protest against Kerala’s demand to dismantle the structure and reaffirm Tamil Nadu’s right on the dam, including storing water at 142 feet, as directed by the Supreme Court
“To emphasis the aims and perspectives of DMK, establish the determination of Tamil Nadu on the issue, echo the fact that Tamils are not subordinates to anyone and at the same time not make anyone subservient and to draw immediate attention of the Central government on this issue, it is resolved to observe a one-day fast on December 12,” the party resolved.
While the hunger strike will be held in all corporations and municipal towns, the party will stage a “mammoth human chain” at Madurai, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai and Dindigul- all of which receive Mullaperiar Dam water, it said. Party Treasurer and former Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin will lead the agitation at Theni, Karunanidhi said, adding party seniors K Anbazhagan and Duraimurugan would head it in other districts.
