Kerala gears up to celebrate Christmas

Saturday, December 17, 2011: Christmas fever has already gripped Kerala with malls, markets, condominiums and hotels all gearing up to celebrate the festival.
With only few days to go for Christmas day celebrations, Kerala is all geared up to celebrate the festival with the people indulging in brisk shopping on Saturday.
Shops, trying to cash in on the festival fever, have readied cakes, Christmas stars, Christmas trees and other items to woo customers.
The cakes market has been lively for over a week now with cakes of different flavours flooding the shops. Prices, slightly on the higher side when compared to the previous year, have not dampened the enthusiasm of the public.
There has been no drop in sales, according to traders. Carol groups from various churches and clubs have started visiting homes.
Meanwhile the liquor wholesalers in Kerala are expecting record sales in the run-up to this Christmas festival season. The liquor sales during previous Christmas festival season in Kerala has crossed Rupees 90 crore.
The state-owned Kerala State Beverages Corporation (KSBC), the sole wholesalers of what is called Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) and beer, is confident of pushing up its sales during the festival.
Festivals see a sharp surge in profit across private bars and state government-owned beverage shops. Kerala, which contains 19 percent Christians of the 32 million populations, is among the highest alcohol–consuming states in India.
