Kottayam: Man sentenced to life for brother’s murder

Friday, December 16, 2011: Unnikrishnan, second accused in a case relating to the brutal murder of Manimala Gopakumar in Kottayam on November 30, 2007 was today sentenced to life and slapped a fine of Rs one lakh by the Principal district judge KP Prasanna Kumari.
Unnikrishnan is the brother of the deceased Gopakumar, police told. Meanwhile the first accused identified as Binuraj (30) was awarded 5 year’s rigorous imprisonment and was slapped a fine of Rs 25,000. The third accused identified as Biju was earlier acquitted in the case by the Court.
The police said Gopakumar who was missing since November 29, 2007, was a victim of a murder in which his own brother and two of his accomplices were involved. Family feud led to the murder of Gopakumar by his brother, the police said.
The man-missing case took a dramatic turn when the police got information from Binuraj of Ranni, who was arrested in connection with an abkari case. During interrogation, he informed the police about the murder.
Soon the other two accomplices, Gopakumar’s brother Unnikrishnan and his relative Biju were taken into custody. The three were taken to Pathanamthitta and the body was exhumed from the spot they had identified.
