TN calls for public support to resolve Mullaperiyar issue

Sunday, December 11, 2011: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha in a statement here urged the support of the public to amicably settle the Mullaperiyar dam issue which has seen Kerala and Tamil Nadu at loggerheads.
She also appealed for calm on the Tamil Nadu Kerala border, saying: “We have no quarrel with Keralites. Destroying their properties is not a solution.”
As the confrontation between the neighbouring states escalated over the safety of the dam, political leaders and lawmakers have been demanding Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s intervention in the issue for the past few days.
Jayalalithaa will convene a special Assembly session on the Mullaperiyar dam issue on December 15. Jayalalitha said the Assembly is likely to pass a resolution that Tamil Nadu will not give up their rights because of an “imaginary threat.”
The Chief Minister added that the solution ”lies in presenting sound technical and scientific data to the Supreme Court.”
