Italian marines’ arrest: SC notice to Centre, State

Monday, April 23, 2012: The Supreme Court on Monday has directed to send notices to Centre and state governments in the petition filed by Italian Embassy requesting the release of the two marines Latore Massimiliano and Salvatore Gironi who have been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the killing of two Indian fishermen.
The case would next be taken up on May 8. Meanwhile, the law ministry has banned additional solicitor general Harin Raval who made a U turn in the Italian ship case in the Supreme Court, from appearing in the next session of the case. Instead of Raval, attorney general Gulam E Vahanmathi will appear.
After ASGs submission in court in which he stated that India has no jurisdiction to detain the Italian ship ‘Enrica Lexie’ from which marines had shot dead two Indian fishermen on February 15 off Kerala coast, there was wide protest against his remarks.
