Agitations to continue at Calicut University

THENHIPALAM: The Left organisations have hinted that the issues in the Calicut University are not going to end with the cancellation of the controversial land deals.
Pro-Left university employees unions and the youth and student wings of the CPM have demanded that the Vice-chancellor should resign and the Syndicate be sacked.
They are starting an agitation raising these demands from Thursday onwards. The protest will begin with a DYFI march to the university on Thursday morning. DYFI is demanding a judicial inquiry into the land deal.  
“We are not satisfied with the decision of the Syndicate in the land deal controversy. DYFI demands the resignation of the Vice-chancellor and dismissal of the Syndicate, besides a judicial inquiry into the issue,” said DYFI Malappuram district president Sathyan.
The Pro-Left employees association is also organising an agitation raising the same demands. The University Samrakshana Samithi (USS) has claimed that they can point out many more lapses in the functioning of the university.
“The cancellation of the three land deals and an inquiry into some other deals will not bring a permanent solution to the issues in the university. The VC is taking decisions after consulting with a nominated Syndicate.  We cannot allow such an ‘illegal’ body to take major decisions regarding the university,” V Stalin, leader of the All-India University Employees Confederation, told .
The responsibility of the nominated Syndicate is to conduct elections to choose a democratically-elected Syndicate and a Senate, he said, adding that the VC was not keen to conduct elections to the Syndicate and the Senate.
