Neyyattinkara by-poll: LDF convention on May 11

Friday, April 27, 2012: Opposition Leader VS Achuthanandan will inaugurate the Left Democratic Front (LDF) convention on May 11 ahead of the by-election to the Neyyattinkara Assembly constituency scheduled on June 2. The vote counting will be held on June 15.
The Assembly seat fell vacant following the resignation of former CPM MLA-R Selvaraj. An official notification regarding this would be announced on May 9, sources said. The last date for filing nominations is on May 16 and the scrutiny would take place on May 17, meanwhile the last date for withdrawing nominations is on May 19.
The crucial LDF meeting held here on Friday has decided to send a delegation led by Opposition leader VS Achuthanandan to meet the Governor H.R Bhardwaj in connection with the alleged Calicut University land scam.
The LDF would also demand action against the Education Minister and Calicut University Vice-chancellor in connection with the issue. The scandal pertains to an aborted move by a section in the University administration and syndicate to assign vast tracts of land forming part of its central campus to some private trusts with academic and sporting interests.
Following the allegations Calicut University syndicate had decided to annul its land allocation to some private trusts with academic and sporting interests, which opposition alleged headed by Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) ministers.
