Saturday, June 25, 2011: Opposition leader VS Achuthanandan today came down heavily on the Centre for its decision to hike the diesel and LPG prices. Speaking to the reporters here on Saturday, Achuthanandan alleged that the Centre had hiked the fuel prices inorder to help the big private companies like Reliance.
Meanwhile the Kerala private bus operators have decided to go on a state-wide token strike on Wednesday as a protest against the increase in diesel prices. This was announced by the Private bus operators’ co-ordination committee after a meeting held here today.
The committee has also urged the State government to take a favourable stand for revising the bus fares. The Committee said that they will launch an indefinite strike if their demands are not met at the earliest.
The central government had yesterday approved a price hike for diesel, LPG and kerosene. Diesel prices will increase by Rs. 3 a litre, and LPG would cost Rs. 50 more per cylinder. The Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM), headed by Finance Minister Pranbab Mukherjee, met on Friday evening and sanctioned the new prices.
