Attack to VB Unithan:Case handed over to CBI

Friday, July 22, 2011: The State Government has decided to hand over the case related to attack on ‘Mathrubhumi’ reporter VB Unnithan at Sasthamcotta to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) had earlier demanded the formation of a Special Investigation Team to probe the case.

June 09, 2011: The Kerala High Court today postponed the verdict on the bail pleas of accused in connection with the attack on scribe in Kollam.

The main accused in the case relating to the attack on a journalist in Kollam, Container Santhosh on Friday filed a bail petition before the Kerala High Court.

Santhosh had surrendered before a Court in Thiruvalla in the case registered by the police in connection with the attack on VB Unnithan, Mathrubhumi reporter. The bail petition moved by Santhosh Nair, former Deputy Superintendent of Police and another accused in the case, too was postponed. The police officer has been arraigned as sixth accused in the case.

He was arrested on May 21 by the special team of the Crime Branch CID probing the attack on Unnithan. According to the police officer, there was no evidence against him to connect him with the case. He was arrested on the basis of the statements given by the accused Santhosh.

Attack on ‘Mathrubhumi’ reporter DySP as an accused

May 21, 2011: The Crime Branch probing the attack on ‘Mathrubhumi’ reporter VB Unnithan today listed Santhosh M Nair, DySP as an accused.

The DySP would be produced before Kollam Court  later in the day. Santhosh M Nair was earlier taken into custody by the crime branch following revelations made by container Santosh, prime accused in the case.

It was earlier accused that container Santosh was engaged by the DySP to eliminate Unnithan for reporting some news against the officer.

Attack to VB Unithan Container Santhosh Surender

Tuesday, May 17, 2011: The prime accused in connection with the attack on ‘Mathrubhumi’ reporter VB Unnithan at Sasthamcotta surrendered before Thiruvalla Court today. The accused has been identified as Container Santhosh.

The Crime Branch had earlier arrested two persons in connection with the incident.

Unnithan, a native of Sasthamkotta, is said to have been manhandled following some reports that appeared in the daily prior to the Assembly elections.

Managing Director of Mathrubhumi, MP Veerendrakumar had urged the government to refer the case to the Crime Branch on the ground that it was a result of conspiracy.
