P C George disqualified from assembly

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Soon after P C George submitted his resignation as MLA from the assembly, Speaker N Shakthan disqualified him till the session of the 13th Kerala Assembly is over. A complaint was lodged by Kerala Congress leader and Chief Whip Thomas Unniyadan seeking George’s disqualification under the anti-defection law.

The speaker said that though he resigned from the assembly on his own, he can be disqualified under Article 191 (2) under tenth schedule 2 (1) of the constitution. He will be disqualified with effect from June 3. The benefits he received during this period will not be taken back. There is no ban for him in contesting the next assembly polls, he said.

George had filed an application to the central election commission seeking to re-register his party Kerala Congress. He had also filed a quo warranto against K M Mani voicing the same demand in April. These are the valid reasons for disqualifying him, Shakthan said.
