Petrol prices slashed by Rs 2/litre

Saturday, June 2, 2012: State run oil companies have decided to cut petrol prices by Rs 2 per litre which will be effective from midnight tonight.

Last month, state oil retailers - Indian Oil Corp, Bharat Petroleum Corp, and Hindustan Petroleum Corp - raised petrol prices by Rs 6.28 a litre, excluding taxes.

No load-shedding for next two years: Minister

Saturday, June 2, 2012: Electricity Minister Aryadan Muhammed has said that there will be no load-shedding for the next two years in the State.

The Minister said that government has taken steps to purchase 650 MW of additional power to avoid load-shedding.

Threat message to CM: Special team to probe

Saturday, June 2, 2012: A special team will reach Cheruvathur to probe on the threat message sent to the mobile phone of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

The police had arrested Ajeesh (26) of Cheruvathur in connection with the incident. The cyber cell when probed noticed that the messages sent consciously to chief minister’s phone were from Ajeesh’s phone.

80% polling registered in Neyyattinkara

NEYYATTINKARA: Bypolls to the Neyyattinkara assembly constituency Saturday recorded a heavy turnout of over 80 per cent with LDF, UDF and BJP locked in a hard battle.

The polling which started at 7 am in the morning ended in a peaceful manner. 71.06% polling was registered in the previous assembly polls. The heavy turnout this time has given hope to the two fronts. Voters standing in the queue were given chance to cast their vote even after the stipulated time.

Talking to reporters after casting their votes, LDF and UDF candidates advocate F Lawrence and R Selvaraj expressed hope in winning the polls.

No untoward incidents have been reported. The polling took place under heavy deployment of police in view of certain violent incidents that had occurred during the campaign.

Heavy voter turnout in Neyyattinkara assembly segment

Saturday, June 2, 2012: More than 80 percent of the 164,856 electorate exercised their franchise in the byelection to the Neyyattinkara Assembly Constituency in this district of Kerala.

Official sources said that close to 80 per cent polling was reported with Athiyanoor Panchayat recorded the highest 82.4 per cent. Voting Percentage in Neyyattinkara Municipality was 78.2.

The constituency has total of 1,64,856 voters, in which 84,832 are women, 79,161 men and 863 service voters.

Achuthanandan visits TP Chandrasekharan’s house

Saturday, June 02, 2012: Opposition leader and CPM veteran V S Achuthanandhan on Saturday visited late Revolutionary Marxist Party leader TP Chandrasekharan’s house at Onchiyam.
The visit, in all probability, will accentuate divisions in the CPI(M). Achuthanandan visited TP’s house soon after Pinarayi Vijayan and Poliburo member S Ramachandra Pillai met him at the Kozhikode guest guest.
Achuthanandan personally met TP’s wife Rema and other family members and held talks with senior RMP leaders. Several party cadres had flocked TP’s house. Chandrasekharan, 51, was killed in Onchiyam near here Friday night while returning home on a two-wheeler.
Chandrasekharan, once a prominent CPI(M) leader in the party stronghold Onjiyam in Kozhikode district, was expelled a few years ago after he fell out with the leadership.
He later joined the RMP floated by CPI(M) rebels and wrested control of Onjiyam village panchayat, ending decades-old rule of the CPI(M).
