Murder of Liji: Relative held

VARKALA: The police Monday arrested the person who attacked 19-year-old Liji of Varkala leading to her death on June 15. The person arrested has been identified as Biju (34), a close relative of Liji and an accused in several cases.  Biju was arrested by a team led by Varkala circle inspector Shaji. Even though he was questioned earlier, he confessed to the crime only last night.


Liji, a resident of Mundayil in Varkala, who was a salesgirl at a fancy ornament shop, was attacked while she was returning home by her relative. Frightened, Liji took refuge in a nearby house and informed the residents of the situation. However, they saw no one outside. So, after waiting for some time, Liji resumed her walk home, and then her stalker made reappearance. This time, he grabbed her by her hair and pulled her towards him. When she objected, he knocked her down and rode the bike over her body, inflicting serious injuries. He then fled the scene. The locals rushed Liji to the Varkala district hospital and then to the medical college hospital, where she was admitted.


She succumbed to her injuries at the Medical College hospital here on June 15.

Special team to probe revelations against Sudhakaran

KOTTAYAM: Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan Sunday said a special team will probe Prashant Babu’s revelations that Congress leader K Sudhakaran was behind the attempt to murder CPM leader E P Jayarajan.


DGP will decide the investigating team tomorrow, he said.

Ansari’s arrest to reveal more on LeT’s Kerala module

The arrest of Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal will shed more light on the Lashkar-e-Toiba module in Kerala and David Coleman Headley’s visit to Kochi on November 16, in 2008 a few days before the 26/11 Mumbai attack. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) suspects that Ansari was close to Abu Rehan alias Wali who conducted armed training for Malayali youth in Kashmir.


According to a top-level NIA official, Ansari had coordinated the Mumbai 26/11 attacks and he knew about Headley’s visit. “Ansari had submitted about his role in the Mumbai attack and was passing information to terrorists from a temporary control room in Karachi. His arrest will give us information on Headley’s motive to arrive at Kochi and on the LeT module in Kerala,” the official said.


Ansari was involved in the Ahmedabad bomb blast and the Aurangabad arms haul in 2006 with Wali.

A 'bomb' against K Sudhakaran

Ebullient Congress MP K Sudhakaran has landed in trouble with an allegation raised by his former driver and municipal councillor Prasanth Babu that K Sudhakaran  was behind the attempt to murder CPM central committee member  E P Jayarajan 16 years ago.


Sudhakaran was quick to fend off the attack by saying that Babu had been nursing a grudge against him as he was not given ticket to contest as councillor  for a second time owing to corruption charges.


But CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan seized upon the opportunity to embarrass the Congress by demanding a thorough probe into the disclosures.


E P  Jayarajan was shot at by a two-member quotation gang, Vikramchalil and Dinesan, in Andhra Pradesh, as the CPM leader was returning to Kerala by train after attending the party congress in 1996.


The bullets hit  his neck but he had a miraculous escape as he received expert medical attention in Chennai a few hours after the incident

Media trying to divert attention from revelations against Sudhakaran: Pinarayi

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A section of the media are trying to divert attention from the allegations leveled against K Sudhakaran MP, said CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan. He criticized the media for giving importance to the differences of opinion in the CPM.


Pinarayi said, “I’ve earlier said about the media syndicate but a bigger term should be used now. The press meet called yesterday to demand a probe on the revelations against Sudhakaran should’ve been highlighted. When asked about the party’s role in the T P Chandrasekharan murder case, I just reiterated that the party has no role in it. That ended there. Instead of highlighting the revelation against Sudhakaran, they were keener in stating that there are problems in the CPM. This was their tactic to divert the attention from the revelations against Sudhakaran.”


Pinarayi said if there are problems in the CPM, the party will discuss it and it needn’t be discussed with the media. When the statement of V S Achuthanandan that whether Pinarayi’s sand will be accepted by the people was brought to notice, he just walked off and said I’ve only so much to say.
