No immediate licence renewal for substandard bars
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The cabinet which convened here Wednesday decided not to renew the licences of 418 substandard bars in the state. The excise department will renew the licences of three star bars and above. Licence of substandard bars will be renewed only after an inspection conducted by the excise deputy commissioner.
The government will start taking steps on it only after the Lok Sabha polls. The cabinet upheld the act of cancelling the licence of 14 bars. The cabinet entrusted law secretary to submit a report on April 10 after studying Supreme Court order in connection with bar licences. The government has directed beverages corporation to collect more liquor in the wake of closure of bars following the non-renewal of licences.
The raid conducted by the excise department recently found that almost 400 bars had only two-star facilities. They also noticed that these bars did not have the star facilities as directed by the tourism department.

Cong, BJP equal enemies for CPI (M): SRP
KANNUR: CPI (M) politburo member S Ramachandran Pillai Tuesday said the Congress and the BJP were equal enemies of the party and the question of supporting one for keeping other from power did not arise.
Addressing Janavidhi-2014, a face-to-face programme organized by Kannur Press Club ahead of the election, Pillai alleged that Congress party had failed to protect the secularism of the country. At the same time, they did not have the capacity to check the strength of BJP led communal forces, he added.
To a question on Defence Minister A K Antony's comments that left parties would support Congress after the election, Pillai said the left front had tasted a bad experience when it supported the UPA-I Government.
He said after 1996, only coalition governments came into power at Centre. So, the local parties had an important role in the election and CPI (M)-led third front's importance should also been seen, he added.
He said the number of seats won by Congress would shrink to the two digit mark while BJP was facing internal issues among leaders.

Chandrachoodan raps CPM; Cracks appear in RSP central leadership
NEW DELHI: Difference of opinion has surfaced in the RSP central leadership, following the RSP Kerala unit’s decision to leave LDF and contest from UDF side.
When party national secretary T J Chandrachoodan along with party’s Kerala unit criticised CPM leaders, a faction in the central leadership has taken the opposite view. In the Bengal unit also the same scenario exists.
On Tuesday, Chandrachodan openly said that CPM leader Pinarayi Vijayan has pawned his soul for pirates, killers and monopolists. He also called V S Achuthanandan a fraud and said that his stand was a mistake.
The RSP leader asked why the solar agitation and secretariat blockade were called off. “If the party wins under UDF ticket, it will function as a constituent of UPA,” he asserted.
In Bengal if the RSP candidate wins from LDF seat, the situation will get weird in New Delhi. The whip will be applicable to a party with more than one member, and in that case RSP will be in trouble and may head towards a split.
