THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief secretary Jiji Thomson expressed displeasure over the organizational lapses in conducting the national games. Talking to reporters after holding talks with the games organizing panel, he said the amount of Rs 15 crores spent for the inaugural function was too much.
He said the inauguration was that of a sports event and not any Onam celebrations. One should have been more careful in choosing the programmes. Unfortunately it did not happen. The serious lapses noticed cannot be ignored. Action should be taken against the guilty. A decision would be taken after holding talks with Sports Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan on the issue, he said.
The official said that he has not seen presentation of mementos and lengthy speeches at any sports events. The games inauguration is not a programme to be conducted on public places. The forte of such programmes should have been precise. Usually inaugural programmes last for only one and a half hours but here four-hour long programmes were witnessed. The errors noticed in the inaugural function should be solved in the closing ceremony. The chief secretary directed to take steps to reduce the expenses and to make the programme a hit.
The chief secretary said some lapses were also noticed in the distribution of passes. An account of the passes distributed has not been kept. He also expressed displeasure for not honouring former sportspersons.
Vigilance Director to go on leave; Substitute not decided
KOCHI: The decision is not yet taken on a substitute for Vigilance Director Vinson M Paul, when he would go on leave. He has taken a 10-day leave beginning Wednesday. Paul has been in charge of the probe into bar bribery case against Finance Minister K M Mani.
Paul, who reached Kochi Tuesday morning, met Advocate General K P Dandapani. He said the government would decide on who should be the substitute for him. He clarified that there was no link between bar bribery case and his going on leave.
DGP M N Krishnamoorthy, who will resign on February 28, has also taken leave and gone to Sikkim in a similar manner.

Bar bribe: Biju Ramesh refuses to hand over hard disc
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The hard disc containing the sound track of the bar owners in the bar bribe case, will not be handed over to the vigilance, said bar association working president Biju Ramesh. The vigilance had asked him to produce the original. Biju said that he will hand over the disc only to the central agency.
The disc containing the edited dialogues of bar owners was earlier handed over to the vigilance but they refused to accept that. Vigilance stand is that they need the original to examine the authenticity of the sound track.

Youth arrested for misbehaving with journalist in Kochi
KOCHI: The police Sunday arrested a youth for misbehaving with a woman journalist in the middle of the road. The arrested has been identified as Roy Varkey of Kadakkal in Thiruvananthapuram.
The girl with the help of others caught him and handed him over to the police.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 35th National Games kicked off on Saturday evening in an ambience filled with high spirit and enthusiasm. At the colourful ceremony held at the Green Field Stadium in Karriavattom, Central Sports Minister Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated the Games.
Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar, actor Mohanlal, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Indian Olympics Association Secretary Rajeev Mehta among other dignitaries witnessed the event. Following this Kerala’s athletic stars such as Thomas, Shiny Wilson, Dhiju, K M Beenamol handed over Games flame to Sachin Tendulkar, who in turn handed over the flame to P T Usha and Anju Bobby Geroge. They lit the huge lamp arranged at the Games venue to officially declare the 35th National Games open.

Venkaiah Naidu thanked the efforts taken by the Kerala government to build the mammoth Green Field Stadium for conducting the games. “ The stadium is the nation’s asset. The Games will make history in Kerala,” he said and congratulated athletes like PT Usha, Shiny Wilson, Anju Bobby George, Tintu Lukka by mentioning their names on by one.
