KOCHI: The Kerala High Court has asked Minister K C Joseph to appear before them on February 16 in a contempt of court case. Joseph had criticised Kerala High Court Judge Justice Alexander Thomas in a Facebook post last July, comparing him to the jackal who fell on the blue dye and said the judge was publicity crazy.
A division bench including Justices Thottathil B Radhakrishnan and Sunil Thomas directed the minister to appear directly in the court on February 16.
V Sivankutty MLA of the CPM moved the court against the minister’s statement.
The single bench criticised the functioning of the AG’s office when they were considering a woman’s plea seeking a CBI probe on her son’s death. The court got irritated when government’s counsel sought more time to inform their stand. The conduct of the government cases is not effective. It is better to close the office of the AG. Cases should be handed over to private advocates. How the AG’s office should function should be learned from Tamil Nadu. The AG should go there and learn it. They are conducting the Mullaperiyar case in a good manner. Here lapses are found from the side of the AG’s office in providing the necessary details to the court. The office is not taking any initiative to execute the court’s order, he said.
Attingal youth’s murder: All four accused arrested
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In the Attingal murder case relating to the murder of Shabeer (27), a resident of Aattingal Vakkam Mananakku house, all the four accused have been arrested.
Vinayak, a gang member residing near Vaikkam Daivapuram temple, was arrested today morning. The other accused in the case and brothers Santhosh and Satheesh (sons of Prasannan) and their friend Kiran (Kumar’s son) were taken into custody today evening.
The shocking incident happened on Sunday evening near Vakkam Thoppivilakam Railway gate. Shabeer’s friend Unnikrishnan (23), who had accompanied him, was also seriously injured in the attack. He was discharged from Medical College hospital yesterday.
Near Thoppivilakam Railway gate, the gang intercepted Shabeer and Unnikrishnan who were going on a bike. Unnikrishan was beaten and grounded. Shabeer, who tried to flee the spot, was grabbed by the ruffians and beaten using a log of wood pulled out from a wayside shop. As soon as Satheesh battered Shabeer’s head, the latter collapsed and fell to the road. As he lay unconscious on the road, Satheesh’ brother Santhosh tried to break his leg. Then he hold out Shabeer’s leg for his brother, who smashed the legs a number of times.
Both Shabeer and Unnikrishnan, who were lying on the road, were shifted to Medical college hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.
Shabeer was a commission agent at a whole sale fish shop at Alamkotta. He is the son of Zakeer Hussain and Nazeema. Shemeer and Shajeer are his brothers. Shabeer’s body was handed over to his relatives after post-mortem.
In protest against the murder, the CPM had called for hartal at Vakkam panchayat and it was total. All shops remained close and all vehicles except private vehicles kept off roads.

Modi inaugurates Global Ayurveda Fest in Kozhikode
KOZHIKODE: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the government was fully committed to promotion of Ayurveda and traditional systems of medicines.
Inaugurating the Vision Conclave-2016 of Global Ayurveda Fest in Kozhikode, Mr. Modi said escalating costs of treatment, side effects of medicines have prompted experts to think of widening horizons to traditional systems.
Noting that in India, "we have had a long great tradition of saints and hermits who evolved our own indigenous systems of healthcare," Mr. Modi urged: "We need to look beyond providing healthcare and engage in the pursuit of good health, a combination of physical and mental well being."
He further said: "Traditional medicine is affordable to many rural people, locally available to the communities, time-tested for its safety and efficacy."
Mr. Modi arrived in Kozhikode on Tuesday at around 12 noon. Governor P. Sathasivam, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and senior BJP leaders welcomed Modi at the international airport.
Tight security arrangements were in place in connection with the maiden visit Mr. Modi.
He will later fly to Coimbatore.

CD controversy: CM holds discussion with AG
NEDUMBASSERY: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy held discussions with Advocate General Dandapani and Director General of Prosecutor Asif Ali to counter the CDs presented by Solar scam accused Saritha S Nair to the Solar commission. The discussion which was held at Nedumbassery airport today morning at 7 continued for about 45 minutes.
The content of the five CDs presented by Saritha before the Solar Commission reportedly went against the chief minister. The CDs contained the conversation of Chandy’s confidant Benny Behanan and Thampanoor Ravi advising Saritha about ways to save the chief minister from the case. The chief minister called AG and IG to the airport to seek advice on how to face Saritha’s threatening revelations.
The chief minister who reached Kochi by air went to Kozhikode in a helicopter and after discussions. He had cancelled his programmes in Kochi and gone to Kozhikode in connection with the prime minister’s visit. Earlier also, the chief minister held discussion at the same airport to plan the next action when the Thrissur Vigilance passed an order to file an FIR against him and Minister Aryadan Muhammed.

Paid Rs 5 lakh to Benny Behanan, 2 lakh to Vishnunath, says Saritha
KOCHI: Saritha S Nair, accused in the solar case, told the commission that she paid money to MLAs Benny Behanan and P C Vishnunath. I gave Rs 5 lakh to Benny Behanan for the party fund. Rs 2 lakh was given to P C Vishnunath in 2011 for Manavika Yatra. However, she said that she had not obtained any receipt for it. She informed the commission that she will produce evidences as and when she gets it.
Saritha said that she has given money not only to congress leaders but to many other politicians. She said that she knew Benny Behanan earlier. Gave Rs 2 lakh to Vishnunatha in two instalments-one lakh during his yatra in Ottappalam and one lakh at the Ernakulam Guest House. The names of many MLAs were levelled in the case and they were all from the ruling front, she said.
She said that it is rather difficult to reveal openly things including the contents of the letter. I will expose things if the commissions holds a secret sitting by avoiding cameras. However, she said that she will not hand over the letter written in Pathanamthitta jail. When the commission asked to hand over the letter in a sealed cover, she said that she will inform later after consulting her advocate.

HC seeks CBI stand on Jayarajan’s bail plea
KOCHI: The Kerala High Court sought CBI’s stand on the anticipatory bail plea of CPM Kannur district secretary P Jayarajan in the Kathiroor Manoj murder case. A division bench including Justice K T Shankaran, Justice Babu Mathew and P Thomas will consider the plea again next Monday for initial argument.
P Jayarajan, 25th accused in Kathiroor Manoj murder case, had earlier filed an anticipatory bail plea in the Thalassery sessions court. However, the sessions court rejected the plea saying bail cannot be granted as Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) has been invoked in the case. Following that, he moved the high court.
P Jayarajan argued in the court that the CBI has not obtained any proofs to invoke UAPA on him and that he was made an accused in the case as part of a conspiracy to defame him and the party in the wake of the elections round the corner.
Advocate M K Damodaran appeared for P Jayarajan. The government had arranged a gunman for Jayarajan from 1997 onwards due to security threat. The gunman informs his moves and travels to police chiefs. In that case, if he had a role in the murder case, then the police would have been aware of it, the plea argued.
