Land identified for airport in Erumeli, says CM
NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Wednesday informed centre that land has been identified for constructing an airport in Erumeli for the convenience of Sabarimala devotees to reach by air. Pinarayi informed this during his meeting with Aviation Minister Ashok Jagapathy Raju. Pinarayi later told reporters that the union minister had assured to provide things including a no objection certificate (NOC) after land is found.
The UDF government had planned to construct an airport in Aranmula. However, the project got delayed due to stiff opposition from Aranmula heritage conservation samithi and the state BJP leadership. The Left Front too had opposed the Aranmula project. Following that, this government identified land in Erumeli.
Sabarimala is visited by millions of devotees and they all want an airport there. The centre had assured to take steps if land is suggested. Land has been found for the airport and this should be informed to the centre. An airport in Aranmula is a closed chapter, he added.
The government has requested for two air strips--one each at Bekkal in Kasargod and Idukki and it should be suitable for chartered flights to land.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Cooperative Banks are observing hartal today in protest against the Centre’s alleged enmity and indifference towards them in the wake of its demonetisation move.
The hartal, which paralysed the Cooperative sector, was called by Samkyuktha Samara Samithy. Primary Agricultural loan societies are also taking part in the hartal. Milk and hospital cooperative societies have been exempted from the hartal. The strikers took out marches to district collectorates. Marches were taken out to RBI regional offices in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. CPM leader V S Achuthananthan inaugurated the march in Thiruvananthapuram.
The agitators’ demand were the Centre and the RBI should take steps to protect cooperative banks, primary societies should be allowed to accept invalid Rs 500 and Rs 1000 and the RBI should accept the notes deposited in chest branches of district cooperative banks.

Hidden camera spotted inside court room toilet
MUTTAM (IDUKKI): A spy camera was found at inside the toilet of First Class Magistrate court of Muttam district court.
The camera was first spotted by a woman staff by around 11:30 in the morning. As soon as she entered the bathroom, she found the pen camera covered in a towel and kept hidden above the flush tank.
The staff immediately informed the matter to Magistrate and others in the court.
Muttam police was called in by the Magistrate and the camera was taken into their custody.
The police said it is a costly camera and had got finger prints from it.

Opposition barbs come from Modi hate: Surendran
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Taking a dig at the Opposition over demonetisation, BJP State general secretary K Surendran has remarked the Opposition’s stand that there is no need to withdraw the decision to scrap Rs 500 and 1000 was realisation that has stemmed from their understanding of the people’s true sentiments.
“The Opposition which first opposed the stand later changed it. If the Centre’s decision was wrong, they should have asked for its cancellation. And, this shows the allegations they had raised earlier had come from their hate for Modi,” he wrote on his Facebook post

MT bags first Deshabhimani Award
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: M T Vasudevan Nair has bagged the first award constituted by Deshabhimani for those given to persons for their overall contributions in the field of social, cultural and literary sectors. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and a citation. The award is introduced from this year onwards as part of platinum jubilee of Deshabhimani, said its chief editor M V Govindan Master.
MT has been chosen for the award for his overall contributions in the field of literary and film fields. While presenting the award to him in February 2017, a MT Sahithyolsavam will be organized in Kozhikode. Special awards would be given to novel, collection of stories and poems as part of platinum jubilee celebrations.
Works from January 2015 to November 2016 would be considered for the award. Rs one lakh each would be given for literary awards. Application with three copies of the work should be sent to Deshabhimani Office before December 15.
