Saturday, December 17, 2011: CPI state secretary CK Chandrappan today demanded the immediate intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the Mullaperiyar dam issue which has seen Kerala and Tamil Nadu at loggerheads.
Speaking to the reporters while addressing a press meet held here on Saturday, Chandy added that the issue must be settled amicably. Kerala Assembly had unanimously passed a resolution insisting on a new dam to replace the 116-year old reservoir citing the imminent danger posed upon 40 lakh families.
Kerala has been pressing for twin demands: lowering the water level in the reservoir to 120 feet and replacing a new dam in the place of the 116-year old structure.
