Karunanidhi to take up dam issue with PM during TN visit

Saturday, 24 December 2011: DMK chief M Karunanidhi will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his two-day visit to Tamil Nadu and take up the Mullaperiyar issue, including “preventing attacks against Tamils” in Kerala and increasing the water storage level of the dam.
The Prime Minister is set to arrive in Tamil Nadu on Dec 25 as part of his two-day visit. The DMK president today chaired a meeting of party’s senior functionaries from Theni district, discussing with them the steps to be taken by the party in connection with the dam issue.
A party statement here said the local DMK functionaries apprised Karunanidhi of the violence in the border areas and “attacks on the local people by the Tamil Nadu police”.
“It has been decided to present a memorandum to the Prime Minister by Karunanidhi and party general secretary K Anbhazhagan demanding that the Centre should not delay in preventing attacks against Tamils in Kerala and take swift action”, the release said.
The leaders would also call for the implementation of the 2006 Supreme Court verdict allowing Tamil Nadu to increase the storage level of the dam to 142 ft, the release said.
