Vilappilsala issue: Tvm Corporation to open control room

Saturday, December 24, 2011: The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has decided to open a control room in connection with the ongoing agitation over the Vilappilsala garbage issue.
The corporation also informed that a crisis management cell would be formed inorder to tackle emergency situation. Uncertainty is looming large over the garbage disposal in Thiruvananthapuram city with the Vilappilsala solid-waste treatment plant being shut down by the panchayat authorities.
With the residents of Vilappilsala kicking up a big stink over the garbage treatment plant and the city corporation deciding to stop collection of waste from flats, apartments and hotels, a major crisis regarding waste treatment is looming over the city.
Since, the deadline set by locals is over, the city corporation has clear apprehensions over sending garbage-laden lorries to Vilappilsala.
Lack of alternative vacant space in the city limits to dump the enormous amount of waste is also worrying the civic body. If the crisis remains unresolved within the next two days, heaps of waste is likely to appear on the backyard of hotels and flats. It is estimated that a single hotel produces minimum 100 kg waste a day.
The trash from city hotels alone would account for a considerable quantity. This is in addition to the waste from flats, hospitals and commercial establishments.
