MDMK activists block roads to Kerala, unrest in borders

Wednesday, December 21, 2011: The MDMK has been undertaking road blockades on the border areas of Kerala in connection with the Mullaperiyar dam issue which has seen Kerala and Tamil Nadu at loggerheads.
The MDMK is creating unrest in many of the checkposts. Transportation from Kerala to Tamil Nadu has come to a standstill. Thiruvananthapuram Kaliyikkavila checkpost was closed.
Police detained MDMK leader Vaiko and P Nedumaran while trying to enforce an economic blockade of Kerala by Tamil Nadu over the Mullaperiyar dam dispute.
Road blockades were held in Kollam, Aryankavu, Kumili, Kambammedu and Valayar. Police closed the Kaliyikkavila checkpost even before the road blockade.
Vaiko, while inaugurating the blockade in Kambam, spoke provocatively alleging that Kerala is trying to destroy the dam and if such things happen lakhs of people will march from TN to Kerala.
The blockade is being held for raising the wate level to 142 feet and to deploy CISF to protect the dam.
