Mullaperiyar row: CPM demands PM’s intervention

Thursday, December 08, 2011: CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan today demanded Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s urgent intervention in the Mullaperiyar dam issue which has seen Kerala and Tamil Nadu at loggerheads.
Speaking to the reporters after visiting the agitation staged by the protestors at Chappath here on Thursday, Pinarayi added that the ruling as well as the opposition parties have the same opinion regarding the issue.
Kerala would remain firm on its twin demands, decreasing the storage capacity of the Mullaperiyar dam to below 136 feet with immediate effect and constructing a new dam within a stipulated time frame, he added.
CPM leader also appealed to those protesting in Kerala to refrain from doing anything that would ignite further tensions between Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
