Thursday, December 08, 2011: The State government has today filed a fresh plea in the Supreme Court in connection with the Mullaperiyar dam issue which has seen Kerala and Tamil Nadu at loggerheads.The petition has been filed seeking permission from the Court for decreasing the storage capacity of the Mullaperiyar dam to below 120 feet with immediate effect considering the present condition of the 116-year-old reservoir.
Tamil Nadu has accused Kerala of being alarmist by alleging that the reservoir has been rendered unsafe by numerous quakes.
The dispute has escalated with Kerala government hardening its stand to demand construction of a new dam and Tamil Nadu reiterating its stand that the retrofitted existing dam is similar to a new dam.
