The deceased has been identified as Devadas, hailing from Palakkad, police told. The temple authorities informed that the elephant “Megharjunan” was in musk and was showing signs of aggression.
The elephant turned violent when it was being tethered to a coconut palm outside the temple compound. Eyewitnesses said the elephant suddenly lost its cool and gored the mahout. Though Devadas was rushed to hospital, he was declared dead-on-arrival.
