Kochi getting better for women

“Some two years ago, it was hard to walk in the night, but there are some changes now. This may be because the night life in Kochi is more than what we get in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode.

Women are finding it safe to walk through the streets even in the night,” says Manju Panickker, a working woman. Most women like Manju are having a comfortable time in Kochi, so proves the statistics of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

The NCRB report throws light on the fact that Kochi is safer for women compared to other major cities like Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Kozhikode.

Interestingly, the same report has underlined Kochi as the city with highest crime rate. According to the NCRB, there were 11,288 incidents of crime against women reported in 2011.

In 2010 it was 10,781. In Kochi, 348 crimes against women were reported in 2011. In 2010 it was 327. There were 30 rape cases, 10 kidnapping cases and 136 cases of cruelty from the husband and relatives.

Kollam city had the highest number of victims as far as crime against women is concerned. As many as 602 cases were reported here in 2011. These included 50 rape cases, 20 kidnapping cases, 1 dowry death and 319 cases of cruelty by husband and other relatives.

In Thiruvananthapuram city, 546 incidents were reported, which included 39 rape cases, 13 kidnapping cases and 156 cases regarding cruelty from relatives. In Kozhikode, there were 444 criminal incidents.

About 14 rape cases, 10 cases of kidnapping and 171 cases of cruelty from relatives were reported. The lowest number of crimes against women was reported from Malappuram and Thrissur.

In Malappuram, there were only 186 cases while in Thrissur it was 319.
