NRI quota: Medicos needn’t take entrance exam: State to HC

The state government on Thursday submitted before the Kerala High Court that seats in the NRI quota in self-financing medical colleges in the state could be filled on the basis of the merit of the students in the qualifying examinations and that they need not write an entrance examination.

State government made the submission on a petition filed by Alex D Joseph of Thirumala seeking a directive to admit students in NRI quota only after an entrance examination.

In a statement, the state government said that the Supreme Court had allowed creation of NRI quota out of the 50 per cent payment seats.

It had held that that the money collected from the NRI students should be utilised for the benefits of students of economically weaker sections of society.

It had also laid down that the NRI students need not write the entrance examination prescribed by the Medical Council of India.

Admission to the course was based on the Regulations on Graduate Medical Education, 1997. In fact, the regulation did not apply to the NRI students.

“The Admission Supervisory Committee had been entrusted with the task of regulating the admission to the NRI quota. The SC said the admission to the 15 per cent NRI quota should be conducted under the supervision of the committee,” state said.
