KOCHI: Dramatic scenes unfolded at the Kadebhagam junction near Pallurthy in West Kochi on Thursday when a person perched on top of a mobile tower, threatening to commit suicide if his demand to remove the structure was not met. According to police, the person, identified as Anil Kumar, 42, a native of Palluruthy, climbed up the five-floor high mobile tower during a protest against the structure by locals. It took over three hours for the authorities to persuade the man to climb down.
“We received a phone call around 11.30 am alerting us about a person standing on top of a mobile tower. As we reached the spot, we could see a huge crowd gathered around the tower, protesting the alleged overnight installation of the structure,” said a police official.
The crisis deepened further as Kumar refused to come down despite repeated requests by the authorities. “He was in no mood to listen to anything initially and eventually he agreed to our offer to take up the issue with the authorities concerned,” the official said.
According to police, the local residents in the area had earlier registered a complaint with the police about the overnight erection of the structure by a private phone service provider. Soon after climbing down, the man felt uneasy and was shifted to a hospital nearby. A case on attempt to suicide has been registered.
