THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Journalists and shutterbugs who mobbed Finance Minister K M Mani’s residence on Tuesday had to wait for hours to see him take a final call on his resignation. They had been kept on tenterhooks from noon when finally, Mani came out of his house at around 8 pm. Then and there, the Finance as well as Law minister, who was visibly emotional, abruptly announced his resignation as minister, before the motley media crowd.
Expressing solidarity with him, Kerala Congress leader and Government chief whip Thomas Unniyadan, too, tendered his resignation.
Mani said, he was resigning, respecting the high court verdict and the resignation letter would be soon sent to the chief minister. When asked whether he was resigning under political duress, he annoyingly said, “No, why should I resign under pressure. I am resigning out of my own will.”
Mani also added that despite resigning as minister, he and his party would remain as a constituent of the UDF and continue to support the government.
Earlier, certain unconfirmed reports said Mani had been reluctant to resign as he maintained that he hadn't done any wrong. But, when other leaders intervened to point out the seriousness of the high court comment, he finally gave in.
